As of Monday at 9:50 PM, Chris and I became parents to a little baby boy named Benjamin Christopher.
Unfortunately his bilirubin levels were really high so he had to have light therapy, which is what you see him doing above (there’s a special UV light under him in the bed). So that kept us from coming home as quickly as we all would have liked. But hey, here we are now!
We’re still figuring out this parenting thing- as you can tell by the stylish bags already under my eyes in this photo- but thus far I wouldn’t trade him for anything. We’re just exploring this new normal as a family and that’s a really amazing feeling to not only share with my awesome husband (who’s earned so many amazing points for being the best teammate ever in this adventure already) but with this new little person who’s taking in the whole world right now.
Obviously this hasn’t been a perfectly smooth ride… the first night home Chris ended up taking Ben downstairs so I could get some sleep and be ready to feed him. The second night was a little better but still rugged- the short version is that putting on a white noise app means that I nearly fall asleep during feedings. Last night ended up being very crazy as I ended up in the ER due to the site of my IV during labor and delivery becoming inflamed- after an hour and a half long ultrasound going all the way from my neck to my hand it was determined I had a small clot in the vein and a possible infection. It’s making things a little more difficult as I can’t hold and carry Ben as much as I’d like to, but we’re making it work.
Obviously this means that hiatus continues… I can’t imagine tearing too much time away from the little man, to be honest. (Which means at long last my habit of getting new video games and then burning an entire day playing them is now under control… apologies, Batman: Arkham Orgins and Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag… I think.)
Also I have no idea if Michael or Steve are still active on here or not but hey I’ll tag them anyways: hi guys, I don’t know if you even remember but here’s the baby you talked to/yelled at via a crochet miniature of yourself at Steampunk World’s Fair way back in May. I have a suspicion that he at least recognizes Michael’s singing voice (I listened to “Make Believe” and “Open Your Heart to Me” at least once daily in the last month I was carrying him) but whether or not he recognizes Steve and/or Lil Steve has yet to be determined.

The Steve Negrete fractal! Thinking about calling it “Epic Mount” or something. Not sure yet. ^^

So I need to tell you all about my dream that I had just before I woke up today.
For some reason, Chris and I were up in Vermont, hanging out at his mom and stepdad’s place and watching TV. They were doing some special about this shop that was owned by the Dos Equis guy, and it specialized in really old booze, guns, and cigars. (Paging Dr. Freud. Anyways.) They do a quick discussion about past employees and for some reason Steve Negrete is named as one of them. Yes. That Steve Negrete. So I’m like “time out. Steve? SPG sound guy Steve?”
Again. In Vermont.
And as soon as I start asking people about it, they’re all like “yeah my brother went to school with him” or “my cousin knew him”. So Chris and I go “hey that’s pretty cool, let’s go check out this store he used to work at I guess.”
So we go on a driving adventure and find the store, and we walk in and are in the middle of looking at this display of whiskey IN A BARREL for like $50 when someone behind the counter points at me and announces that “YOU HAVE POTENTIAL!”
"GET OVER HERE, PULL YOUR HAIR BACK, LET’S TEACH YOU HOW TO SPIN FIRE".
UM NO? I trip on flat surfaces. FIRE BAD. But they haul me over anyways, and get me doing some rudimentary stuff, although I’m panicking the entire time because the store is FULL OF GUNPOWDER AND ALCOHOL WE COULD KILL OURSELVES PRETTY MUCH INSTANTLY IF I DECIDE TO RANDOMLY FALL OVER. But anyways. While I’m in the middle of all this, the door is opened by… Steve Negrete. He takes one look at me and yells, “YOU. I WILL DUEL YOU.”
"BECAUSE YOU HAVE TAKEN OVER MY PLACE AS RESIDENT FIRESPINNER."
"This is fire, not Yugioh- okay, fine, whatever."
So Steve looks around and decides he’s going to duel me for… my husband. I of course lose. He then decides Chris is going to be Lil’ Steve’s new epic mount and pulls out his camera, and films a Lil’ Steve video right there. And then as quick as it started, it was over and he left.
We go back to Chris’ mom’s, and I shower and change and once I come back upstairs, his mom (Debbie… not that one) asks if we had fun. I very sincerely reply “NO”… and then I woke up.
It was odd. The end.
How I used to label the sound board: with tape and a sharpie. ABSOLUTELY PRIMITIVE.
How I label the board now: WITH TECHNOLOGY.
Everyone gets their own personalized LCD screen above their fader.
I keep giggling at the “Mo!” at the top. Like Steve’s sitting back there going “Do we have enough Rabbit?? NO. MO’ RABBIT!”

2012 started out okay, but then went downhill, as the end of February was when my father-in-law had the stroke that ultimately claimed his life in March. I was laid off my tutoring job shortly after that. It all seemed like everything was against me and Chris having a good year.
But then, courtesy of Tumblr, I found Steam Powered Giraffe. And I was immediately hooked. Chris got interested and bought Album One and the Two Cent Show for us to listen to on a car ride to Vermont. We heard Ice Cream Parade for the first time on that drive- ironically, I think we were going past Waterbury at that point, which is where the Ben and Jerry’s factory is- and we kept having to pause it to laugh at how absurd it was. For the entire weekend we were up there, we kept quoting it at each other, much to the confusion of anyone else nearby. We got home and I started writing again after having been in a rut for the last year. I sucked Jaime into it (and I regret nothing). After so many months of living in darkness and melancholy, I finally found something that made me feel happy again, that I could go back to when I was having a bad day. I looked forward to the zoo videos like they were a phone call from a friend. And when more bad things came down our way- when Granddad Uhlman’s cancer claimed his life, and when Grandpa Houle passed away- they seemed a little more manageable, because I could play SPG to retreat away from the nasty feelings and to feel more balanced again… because yes, there was bad happening and it was hard, but there was also good in our lives that mattered so much more.
So thanks, even though I don’t think you all will see this. But thanks SPG. You helped my 2012 be better than I could have expected back nine months ago.
whoops i drew a steve for this really really awesome tea project

Or rather “Jenn rehashes her dream time”.
So for some reason, SPG had landed a gig in Vermont and somehow Chris and I were picked to be the official guides? I think there was some voodoo involved or something. But anyways we drive up to Vermont, pick everyone up at the airport, take them to the hotel, and then are like “so we’re going to show you all the cool sort of touristy but not quite stuff in the area.” And everybody’s like “yeah we can get behind that”.
Off we go, then, and we go to Lake Champlain Chocolates and sit for the “how we make the chocolates” presentation which somehow boiled down to someone let Michael Reed sit next to me and we started making faces through the glass at the workers to try and make someone laugh. And then we went to Vermont Teddy Bear and took the tour, and everybody made little stuffed animals at the end.
And then we drove down to Ben and Jerry’s and did that tour, and Bunny was flipping out because one of the ice creams that they were making that day was Americone Dream which meant that she was going to sample it from the source, super fresh. And David kept trying to get her to shut up but she was telling him to shut up and it got really amusing for a bit. So we finally get to the samples, and then out into the shop proper, where Steve says the magic words:
"What’s a Vermonster?”
And then upon having it explained everyone but Sam decreed that they wanted to try consuming this thing. So Sam decided that he’d take David’s phone and make it a livestream event.
Cue people all racing online to watch five out of six members of Steam Powered Giraffe, and me and my husband, try to devour a giant ice cream sundae. I woke up just as we finished and Steve decided I should WEAR the bucket formerly full of ice cream and whipped cream and chocolate sauce.
So in short strange dream was strange but also cool?
The Lost Zoo Adventures of Lil’ Steve - Talkin’ ‘bout the Takin.
This movie is going to get washed away in the sea of reactions to the new robot. That’s ok though. Lil’ Steve believes in sticking to his schedule.

Awww yiss I love me some Lil’ Steve
