Avatar: The Last Airbender Fan Choice Awards

different-scream:

mylifeisavatarthelastairbender:

Welcome to the 2011 Avatar: The Last Airbender Fan Choice Awards!  In curiosity, I’ve asked the fandom to review many aspects of the popular children’s television show, Avatar: The Last Airbender and then recorded the popular vote.  So here are the awards as chosen by the fans themselves!

Let’s begin.

In the category of Best Performance in Combat:

WINNER

AVATAR AANG.  Big surprise—The protagonist kicks some major fire nation butt in his endeavors!

RUNNER-UP

PRINCESS AZULA.  The fire nation princess gone mental—Her craftiness is much appreciated on the battlefield.

HONORABLE MENTION:  Zuko, Toph, Master Pakku, Katara, and everyone’s favorite badass, Jun.

Moving on!

In the category of Best BAMF-Turned-Good:

WINNER

PRINCE ZUKO.  From angsty teen to realized man, Zuko’s rich character development wins him the award of the best BAMF gone to the right side.

RUNNER-UP

MAI.  Beginning as an ally of Azula and an enemy of the Gaang, we soon find the heart in what we thought was a hollow shell of a firenation beauty.

HONORABLE MENTION: Jet.

Next up, we have our most hug-worthy category.

In the category of Cutest Character:

WINNER

AVATAR AANG.  Cute, but powerful!

RUNNER-UP

TY-LEE.  Poof!

HONORABLE MENTION:  The Duke, Foo Foo Cuddlypoops, Flopsy, Teo, Appa, Katara, Momo, and Zuko.

Now let’s celebrate Bryke’s love for cheesy teen romance!

In the category of Best Romance:

WINNER

KATAANG.  Canon shippers rejoice!

RUNNER-UP

SUKKA.  Sokka’s one true love (after meat and sarcasm, that is) is this memorable Kyoshi warrior.

HONORABLE MENTION:  Maiko, Tyzula, and Yuokka.

Let’s give it up for the writers as we move to the next category.

In the Category of Best Line:

WINNER

“No.  You miscalculated.  I love Zuko more than I fear you.”- MAI  Because it is wise to choose love over fear.

RUNNER-UP

“When love is real, it finds a way.” - AVATAR ROKU.  Anywhere I go, I’m home, if you are there beside me; like dark turning into day…

HONORABLE MENTION:  Erm—I got some pretty out-there answers for this one, so I’m just gonna stick to the winners…

Let’s see who made Willow Smith proud!

In the category of Best Hair:

WINNER

ZUKO, SEASON 3.  A sex symbol of Avatar.

RUNNER-UP

KATARA.  Zuko’s got some competition with these luscious locks!

HONORABLE MENTION: Jet, Azula, Meng, Wang Fire, and Aang (season 3).

Now to see who would have the best yearbook picture!

In the category of Best Smile:

WINNER

AVATAR AANG.  The most-seen smile in the show.

RUNNER-UP

TOPH BEI FONG.  So rare, but so beautiful!

HONORABLE MENTION: Jet, Zuko, Sokka, Foamy, and Suki.

Avatar has created a fictional world with some crazy—yet beautiful—animals.  But, which ones do the fans prefer?

In the category of Best Animal Hybrid:

WINNER
There’s a tie!

Here are the two considered best by the fandom:

THE TURTLE DUCK.  They may be cute, but if you mess with their babies…

THE PLATYPUS BEAR.  Close cousin of the just…Bear.

HONORABLE MENTION:  Appa (sky bison), Koala Sheep, Saber-Toothed Moose Lion,  Cat Owl, Polar Bear Dog, Penguin Otter, Momo, Rabaroo, Ostrich Horse, and just…Bear.

Time for sightseeing!

In the category of Most Breathtaking Places:

WINNER

BA SING SE.  At sunset, it’s enough to make you cry.

RUNNER-UP

THE SPIRIT OASIS.  A wonderful home to vegetation and spirits.

HONORABLE MENTION:  Ember Island, The Waterfall in ‘Sokka’s Master’, The Northern Water Tribe, The Boiling Rock, The Cave of Two Lovers, and the Southern and Western Air Temples.

And now Avatar’s trademark: bending.

In the category of Coolest Form of Bending:

WINNER

FIRE.  It’s destruction, but it’s also life.  Use it wisely.

RUNNER-UP

WATER.  Thanks to Katara for coining the ferociousness of the art!

HONORABLE MENTION: Energy, Lightning, Metal, Blood, and Air.

Enough with the epic.  Let’s celebrate the silly!

In the category of Funniest Moment:

WINNER

THAT AWKWARD MOMENT WHEN ZUKO WALKS IN ON YOU TRYING TO SEDUCE SUKI.  Well helloo—.

RUNNER-UP

THE FRIENDLY MUSHROOM.
Sokka hits the cactus juice, and he hits it hard.

HONORABLE MENTION:
Zuko Here, Zuko and Jin’s Date, Zuko Talks to a Frog, Azula Plays Volleyball, Look! There it is!, The Ember Island Players Show, Sokka and Foo Foo, Appa vs. Momo, and ‘Wang, Wang Fire’.

On a serious note,

In the category of Best Episode:

WINNER

2X20, ‘THE CROSSROADS OF DESTINY’.  Season two finishes strong with this epic feat describing the fall of the Earth Kingdom to fire nation rule.

RUNNER-UP

3X16, ‘THE SOUTHERN RAIDERS’.  This episode answers the ever important question, ‘What happened to Kya?’

I see what you did there, Zutarians.

HONORABLE MENTION:  ‘The Awakening’, ‘The Ember Island Players’, ‘The Western Air Temple’, ‘The Drill’, ‘Sozin’s Comet: The Phoenix King’, ‘The Fortuneteller’, ‘The Day of Black Sun’, ‘Sozin’s Comet: Into the Inferno’, ‘The Tales of Ba Sing Se’, ‘The Cave of Two Lovers’, and ‘The Headband’.

The Track Team has produced a wonderful soundtrack for many epic scenes of Avatar: The Last Airbender.  In their honor:

In the category of Best Soundtrack Moment:

WINNER

THE LAST AGNI KAI. Azula and Zuko’s last battle is emphasized by this beautiful track.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49_cIR5hANI

RUNNER-UP

THE AVATAR’S LOVE.  The last song heard on the show.  It brings me to tears every time!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t49awwcktN0

HONORABLE MENTION: The Opening, The Nomad Songs.

The next category touches on all those in the series who sacrificed all they had for all they believed in.

In the category of Best Leader:

WINNER

GENERAL IROH.  The Dragon of the West provides good tea and good advice for many characters in the series.

RUNNER-UP

SOKKA.  The brains of the Gaang, Sokka is good in a tight situation as well as on the battlefield.

HONORABLE MENTION: Avatar Kyoshi, King Bumi, Azula, Firelord Sozin, and Hakoda.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is filled to the brim with eye-popping battles and awesome displays of bending.  Take a look at some of the great battles we’ve seen.

In the category of Best Battle:

WINNER

ZUKO VS. AZULA, ‘SOZIN’S COMET: INTO THE INFERNO’.  Genius firebending, backgrounds, and music complete this jaw-dropping scene.

RUNNER-UP

AANG VS. OZAI, ‘SOZIN’S COMET: AVATAR AANG’.  The battle the entire series was leading up to did not disappoint.

HONORABLE MENTION: Aang & Katara vs. Zuko & Azula (‘The Crossroads of Destiny’), The Seige of the North.

The characters of the series often learn lessons from the past.  That being said:

In the category of Best Flashback:

WINNER

‘GIRLS ARE CRAZY!’.  The notable flashback from ‘Zuko Alone’ portrays the origins of the romance between Mai and Zuko.

RUNNER-UP
Another tie!

Two tied for second place in the category of ‘Best Flashback’.

LIL’ APPA.  This flashback from ‘Appa’s Lost Days’ recalls the day Aang met Appa.

KYA.  This flashback is repeated from three different points of view in ‘The Southern Raiders’ and centers around how Sokka and Katara’s mother met her fate.

HONORABLE MENTION:  Iroh and Lu-Ten, Aang Leaves Home, ‘The Avatar and the Firelord’, and Toph Learns from Badgermoles.

Along with the main series, several shorts were produced involving the Avatar cast.  Here, we pay homage to them.

In the category of Best Chibi Short:

WINNER

‘SCHOOL TIME SHIPPING’.  The cast is placed in a school, where a dance is approaching.  Who will ask who?  What will we learn?

RUNNER-UP

‘SWAMP SKIIN’ THROWDOWN’.  The Gaang takes to the swamp where they learn the valuable art of swamp skiing.

HONORABLE MENTION:  ‘Bending Battle’ and ‘Escape from the Spirit World’.

The four nations lived together in harmony.  That is, until the fire nation attacked.  So I posed the question, ‘Which nation is the best nation?’  Let’s see what you guys said.

In the category of Best Nation:

WINNER

THE AIR NOMADS.  Though most tragically perished in the Air Nomad Genocide, the spirit of the air nomads is one that is appreciated throughout the series.

RUNNER-UP
It’s a tie!

There was a tie for the runner-up in ‘Best Nation’.

THE FIRE NATION.  Ruthless and deadly, the nation’s mass appeal is characterized by dangerous bending and kickass antagonists.

THE EARTH KINGDOM.  Through 100 years of war, the people of the Earth Kingdom retained their hope and honor admirably.

HONORABLE MENTION:  The Water Tribe.

Talk about multiple personality!  Let’s take a look at some of the best disguises at alter-egos whipped up by the characters in Avatar: The Last Airbender.

In the category of Best Disguise/Alter Ego:

WINNER

THE BLUE SPIRIT.  An enemy of the fire nation, the blue spirit is Zuko’s disguise used to get away with vice activities.

RUNNER-UP

WANG FIRE.  This disguise used by Sokka in ‘The Headband’ (and then again in ‘Nightmares and Daydreams’) gives him a beard and a moustache and a rather large ego.

HONORABLE MENTION:  The Blind Bandit, The Painted Lady, and Ozai’s Angels as the Kyoshi Warriors.

‘Epic’ can be described by Aunt Wu (‘The Fortuneteller’) as an ‘awesome conflict between the forces of good and evil; a battle whose outcome will determine the fate of the whole world.’  Time to talk about the best (and worst) characters of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

In the category of Best Villian:

WINNER

PRINCESS AZULA.  Shocker.  BAH DUN TSSSSS.

RUNNER-UP

FIRELORD OZAI.  Seriously, what kind of A-hole burns and banishes his son for being a smartmouth?  And then tries to kill him when he does it again?

HONORABLE MENTION:  Combustion Man and Zhao.

On the lighter side, here are some of the memorable heroes of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

In the category of Best Hero:

WINNER

AVATAR AANG.  He did it.  After three long seasons of struggle, he restored peace and unity to the world.  Way to go, little buddy!

RUNNER-UP

FIRELORD ZUKO.  Second-best hero is quite an upgrade from the ‘Not-as-much-of-a-jerk-as-you-could-have-been’ award.

HONORABLE MENTION: Iroh, Sokka, and the Kyoshi Warriors.

There are a great many minor characters that add to the show’s dynamic.  When asked to pick a favorite, the responses varied due to the rather large cast.  However, a conclusion was eventually made by fans (but it was a close call).

In the category of Favorite Minor Character:

WINNER

THE CABBAGE MERCHANT.  ‘MY CABBAGES!’  It never gets old!

RUNNER-UP

JET.  The Robin Hood of the Avatar world, if you will.  Known for his signature hooked swords.

HONORABLE MENTION: Foamy, Jeong Jeong, Teo, Jun, Meng, Avatar Kyoshi, Haru’s Moustache (idk), Smellerbee, Jin, and Chong.

Along with its action sequences, the show has its share of drama.  So which moments topped the chart on the drama-o-meter?

In the category of Most Dramatic Moment:

WINNER:

‘THE EARTH KINGDOM HAS FALLEN’.  The heart-wrenching last few moments of the season two finale.

RUNNER-UP

‘KATARA IS CONFUSED’.
We kissed at the invasion… and I thought we were going to be together… but we’re not.’

HONORABLE MENTION:  The Cave of Two Lovers: Did They Kiss?, Appa at the Circus, Iroh Forgives Zuko, Yue Becomes the Moon, Boomerang Isn’t Coming Back, You’ve Miscalculated, and Leaves from the Vine.

And now, the moments that were epically epic in epic proportions.

In the category of Most Epic Moment:

WINNER

ENERGYBENDING.
It doesn’t get any more epic than this.

RUNNER-UP

‘AANG GRABS OZAI’S BEARD’.
As if to say, ‘LISTEN, BITCH.  NO MORE FUCKING AROUND!’

HONORABLE MENTION:  Katara Faces Yon Rha, Sokka Makes a Sword, Katara Forgives Zuko, Katongue on the Balcony, Azula Shoots Aang, Aang goes Ocean Spirit, Suki Comes Back, and Zuko Takes a Stand to Ozai.

Something to be admired about the storytelling involved in the series is the way that it all wraps up so excellently.

In the category of Best Finale:

WINNER

‘SOZIN’S COMET’.
This four-part masterpiece ends the series by resolving all conflicts but one, ‘Where the heck is Ursa?!?’

RUNNER-UP

‘THE CROSSROADS OF DESTINY’
Best episode and second-best finale?  Definitely worth a rewatch!

HONORABLE MENTION:  The Seige of the North.

And now for famous beginnings.

In the category of Best Season Premiere:

WINNER

‘THE AWAKENING’.
Book 3 starts with this intense premiere, posing many important questions and problems to be solved in the series’ final season.

RUNNER-UP

‘THE AVATAR STATE’.
The Avatar State is explored in the Book 2 premiere.

HONORABLE MENTION: ‘The Boy in the Iceberg’.

Some of the foods mentioned in Avatar sound less than delectable.  I asked for a popular opinion.

In the category of Best Food:

WINNER

FIRE FLAKES.
Though a bit too hot for Sokka, Mai eats them like candy.

RUNNER-UP

LYCHEE NUTS.
Consume in moderation.

HONORABLE MENTION: Fire Gummies, Cabbages, Cactus Juice, Fruit Tarts, Non-fried Festival Dough, and the Kyoshi Island Buffet.

Next, we examined the cool weapons of Avatar.

In the category of Best Weapon:

WINNER

SPACE SWORD.
Sokka owns this sword made of meteorite.

RUNNER-UP

BOOMERANG.
‘You do always come back!’

HONORABLE MENTION: Dual Swords, Hooked Swords, Bow and Arrow, Fan, and Glider Staff.

Another prevailing theme is friendship.  Here’s the fans take on the best and worst.

In the category of Best Friendship:

WINNER

ZUKKA.
Sokka and Zuko.  Their personalities foil one another, leading to endless—and awkward—fun.

RUNNER-UP

OZAI’S ANGELS.
I can’t think of a better way to hang out with my girlfriends than to conquer an Earth Kingdom stronghold, either.

HONORABLE MENTION: Bumi/Aang, Zuko/Toph, Sokka/Aang, Aang/Zuko, Toph/Katara, Aang/Appa, Toph/Aang, Tokka, Momo/Appa.

I asked the fandom which creator they liked best.

In the category of Coolest Creator:

WINNER

BOTH.  Either the fans are seriously indecisive or they take the two as a matched set, but I consistently got the answer, ‘HOW DARE YOU SEPERATE THEM?!?’.  Wish granted, they both won.

RUNNER-UP

BRYAN KONIETZKO.  Of course, those who did decide chose this feller.

HONORABLE MENTION:  Michael Dante DiMartino.

And let’s not forget the talented actors that voice our favorite characters!

In the category of Coolest Voice Actor/Actress:

WINNER

DANTE BASCO.
Often seen as ‘sexy’ or ‘hot’ to the womenfolk, the voice actor for Zuko is a fan favorite.

Trivia time!  Basco’s brother voiced actor Zuko in the episode, ‘The Ember Island Players’.

RUNNER-UP

GREY DELISLE.
She voices Azula as well as many other smaller roles throughout the series.  If you look at this girl’s IMDB page, she’s been in every animated show ever.  I kid you not.

HONORABLE MENTION:  Crawford Wilson (Jet), Cricket Leigh (Mai), Zach Tyler Eisen (Aang), Jack DeSena (Sokka), and Jessie Flower (Toph).

One might ask, what is the best season of Avatar?

In the category of Best Season:

WINNER

BOOK 3: FIRE.  There are no words.  You must watch.

RUNNER-UP

BOOK 2: EARTH.
This action-packed addition will entertain, if not stun.

One might just say it keeps getting better.

HONORABLE MENTION:  Book 1: Water.

AND NOW FOR THE BEST PART OF AVATAR, AS CHOSEN BY THE FANS:

EVERYTHING.
I got response after response with this single word.  There is no one part that sums up the glorious bliss that is Avatar: The Last Airbender.

After this ridiculously long tour around the world of Avatar, it can be concluded that a children’s show doesn’t just have to be fun; it can be art.

Thank you to piandao.org for the quality photos, avatarspirit.net for the direct quotations, and most of all, thank you to the fans for voicing your opinions, involving yourselves, and giving input.

Peace, love, and Cactus Juice!

this needs more notes… seriously guys…
